I'm a service advisor at an independent repair shop. Most drivers focus on whether the car still moves and completely miss whether it stops. The question everyone asks is, how bad is it? The question they should ask is, what's the worst thing that happens if it fails at highway speed?

A common call I get is about brake judder or a low pedal. Sometimes you can get away with pads and a rotor resurface. But if the rotor is scored, cracked, or below minimum thickness, resurfacing isn't a fix. Under the Clean Air Act, tampering with emissions equipment is a federal violation. Most states with emissions testing will also fail you at inspection. The car runs, but the engine is no longer doing what it was designed to do.

How to Tell What You're Dealing With

  1. Does it affect braking, steering, or engine cooling? If yes, scenario 1. Fix it before you drive any significant distance.
  2. Is there a warning light, a fluid leak, or a smell that's getting worse? If it's not critical yet, you're probably in scenario 2. Get it checked within the week.
  3. Does the car run but fail emissions, or throw a catalyst code? That's scenario 3. You can drive to a shop, but don't plan a road trip.

If you're still not sure, pay for a 30-minute inspection. It's not a waste of money. A good shop will tell you straight, this can wait, and here's the timeline. I still kick myself for not chasing a small coolant leak years ago. It turned into a head gasket job that cost ten times what the radiator would have. That mistake is why I take leaks seriously now.
