I've spent six years on the parts-procurement side of independent repair shops. When a brake job or an engine repair comes back to the bay, I'm usually the person who ordered the part that didn't fix it. So this article isn't theory. It's the checklist I use before I approve a purchase order.
There is no universal good-parts list. The right replacement depends on your failure mode. If the diagnosis is wrong, even an OE-grade Raybestos part or a matching M156 camshaft becomes an expensive paperweight.
Three scenarios with different ordering rules

Brake issue: Raybestos CV89021 power brake booster check valve or Element3 FRC11830N caliper?
Start with the brake vacuum side. For many vehicles, the Raybestos CV89021 power brake booster check valve is the direct replacement part. It is small, but it has one important job: it lets vacuum pass from the manifold into the booster, then holds it there. If the valve fails, the booster loses vacuum and the pedal goes hard—often after the car sits overnight.
In early 2022, a shop manager called with exactly that symptom. Needs a booster. That's what he told me.
I knew I should ask whether anyone tested the check valve first. Instead, I asked myself how often it is really that valve. That was the one time it was that valve. I sent a remanufactured booster; the tech installed it; the pedal was still hard the next morning. Then I sent the Raybestos CV89021 power brake booster check valve. The tech installed it in ten minutes. That fixed the car.
Now flip to the hydraulic side. If the brake pulls, the pad wears unevenly, or there is fluid on the inside of the wheel, a check valve won't help. Why keep these separate? The CV89021 lists for around $20 on our January 2025 distributor sheet. A caliper costs several times that, before labor and brake fluid. If the true failure is the check valve, replacing a caliper turns a ten-minute job into a two-hour brake bleed. If the true failure is a seized piston, installing a new check valve leaves the vehicle with a brake that still drags. The part was fine. The diagnosis wasn't.
M156 camshaft: stock replacement or performance upgrade
The M156 camshaft is not a click-the-first-listing part. The top-end tick that often shows up in the 50,000-to-80,000-mile range—well, mileage is not the only factor; oil condition matters too—requires visual inspection before ordering. Pull a valve cover, look at the lobes and followers, and measure.
In March 2024, I approved two M156 camshafts from an aftermarket supplier. The engine serial was correct. The price was normal. I did not confirm the part marking on the old camshaft. The supplier's application note showed a production split: early valve-train design and late design. We had ordered the late set for an early engine. The mismatch cost about $1,270 in restock and lost bay time.
If the vehicle is a street car and the goal is stock behavior, my default is an OEM-spec camshaft that matches the original part number and finish. Ask the supplier for coating or hardness information before approving the order. A cheap cam lobe can look acceptable on the bench and still wipe out after 5,000 miles.
If the vehicle is a track or higher-output build, the M156 camshaft decision becomes a package decision. You need matched lifters, spring pressure, and valvetrain geometry. In that scenario, the cheapest M156 camshaft is the wrong yardstick. The second teardown will cost far more than the parts saved.
Alternator, fuel pump, and the overheating question
Can a bad fuel pump cause overheating? Here's the honest answer: not directly, but indirectly. A weak fuel pump can stall the engine. The moment the engine stops, the water pump stops, coolant stops moving, and the temp gauge climbs. That looks like an overheating failure, but the fuel pump simply stopped the engine. The cooling system may be completely healthy.
That distinction affects purchasing. If a car stalls and then temperature rises, do not automatically order a radiator, water pump, or alternator. Check what actually stopped the engine. If battery voltage stays low while running, you may need an alternator. If fuel pressure is low while cranking, the fuel pump is the suspect. If temperature climbs while parked with the engine running, look for a fan and coolant problem.
The cost of alternator replacement is also a common reason people ask whether they can avoid it. Based on invoices our shops paid in Q3 2024, a reman alternator for a common full-size pickup ran about $185 to $310, plus $120 to $280 in labor. Those numbers will change with region and vehicle. But replacing a good alternator costs more than the part: it adds another diagnostic fee, another tow, and another day of downtime.
Diagnostic gate before you buy: check battery voltage at rest and at idle under load. If the alternator output is above 13.8 volts and does not sag, the charging system is not your first suspect. If the engine cranks but won't start and fuel pressure is low, that is a fuel-delivery problem. If the car shuts down at a light and then the temp rises, the first repairs to investigate are the cause of the shutdown and the cooling fans that should have come on after the engine stopped.
How to identify which scenario you are in
Use the branch test before spending money.
- Brake: Are you dealing with vacuum or hydraulic failure? Hard pedal after sitting or a booster hiss? Test the check valve. If it leaks, use the Raybestos CV89021 power brake booster check valve. Visible fluid, brake pull, or uneven pad wear? Use a Raybestos Element3 disc brake caliper, including FRC11830N if it fits the application.
- M156 engine: Is this a stock repair or a performance build? Confirm part markings on the old cam before ordering. For stock use, choose an OEM-style M156 camshaft with documented hardening. For performance, treat the cam and valvetrain as one package.
- Charging/fuel/heat: Is the problem electrical, fuel, or cooling? Test voltage and fuel pressure. Remember that a bad fuel pump can make an engine shutdown feel like overheating, so verify cooling operation separately.
That checklist has saved more money than any discount code. It might be slower than clicking order on a guess, but efficiency means avoiding the comeback, not just placing the order faster.
One limitation: this comes from the purchasing side of North American service shops, and my sample is mostly fleet and light-duty vehicles. Heavy trucks and serious motorsports builds need even deeper verification. But the habit of separating brake, engine, and charging/fuel branches before ordering? That part travels.
