Now my pre-order checklist has exactly three lines: Is the part proven in this vehicle class? Does the supplier have a track record I can verify? Will it be here when I need it? If the answer to any of those is "not sure," I stop and ask why. That single habit has caught 47 potential problems in the past 18 months.

If you're putting together a maintenance plan and someone asks you whether you can afford the better part, ask them a better question: "Can I afford the uncertainty?"

Seven years ago, I would have bought the cheap driveshaft and hoped. Three blown budgets later, I don't. I buy the known part, I verify the delivery date, and I write the check. That's not being lazy. That's being honest about what I know—and what I don't want to learn again.
