If you’re responsible for sourcing automotive metal stamping parts, CNC automotive components, forging parts, or aluminum extrusions — and you’re tired of discovering hidden problems after the order is placed — this checklist is for you.
I manage purchasing for a mid-sized OEM supplier. We spend roughly $1.2 million annually across 12 vendors for metal-formed parts. I’ve made enough mistakes that I now keep a running list of what to verify before signing. Here are the five steps I follow every time — and the one step most people skip.
Step 1: Verify Multi-Process Integration Capability
I used to think "one-stop shop" was just marketing fluff. Then in 2022, we had a program that required both a stamped bracket and a forged lever. I sourced them separately — two vendors, two sets of tooling, two logistics streams.
Looking back, I should have looked for a supplier that does stamping, forging, CNC machining, and aluminum extrusions in-house. Why? Because when you have separate vendors, the real pain isn’t the price — it’s the coordination. Tolerances drift between shops. Lead times never align. And when something goes wrong, each vendor blames the other.
What to check: Ask for a list of processes they offer under one roof. Don’t just take “yes” — request a sample part that involved at least three of those processes. If they can’t show you one, they’re probably just subcontracting the rest.
Step 2: Evaluate Die Design & Manufacturing In-House
The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about die ownership. We ordered a progressive die for a new stamping part. The supplier said they “managed” die design — but they outsourced the actual build to a third party. When the first samples came in, the dimensions were off by 0.3mm on a critical hole. The third party blamed the design; the supplier blamed the build. We lost 8 weeks.
Now I insist on seeing their toolroom. If a supplier designs and manufactures their own dies, they can iterate fast. If they don’t, every revision turns into a conference call with people who weren’t even in the original quote.
Checklist item: “Can you show me a die you designed and built in the last 6 months? And can I tour your toolroom?” If they hesitate, that’s a red flag.
Step 3: Insist on Progressive Die Case Studies
Progressive dies are the secret sauce for high-volume automotive stamping. They’re also the hardest to get right. Most suppliers can handle simple single-station dies. But multi-stage progressive dies — where the coil goes in and a finished part comes out — separate the pros from the pretenders.
I didn’t fully understand this until a $40,000 order came back with burrs on every edge. The supplier had used a single-station die that required secondary operations. They never told me. The “progressive” capability on their website was aspirational, not operational.
What to ask for: “Please share two examples of progressive dies you’ve built for automotive clients — including the number of stations, material thickness, and cycle time.” Compare their numbers to your volume requirements. A supplier who can’t show you at least one automotive progressive die reference probably shouldn’t be quoting your job.
Step 4: Confirm Quality Certifications — and Verify Them
Everyone says they’re IATF 16949 certified. But current certification matters more than a logo on a brochure. In 2021, we onboarded a forging parts supplier who claimed certification. During their first delivery, 12% of parts failed hardness testing. Turned out their certification had lapsed six months prior — but their sales deck still showed the badge.
Here’s what I do now: I ask for their certificate number and check it against the IATF database (it’s public). I also ask for their most recent internal audit findings — specifically any non-conformances related to dimensional control. If they won’t share, I assume they have something to hide.
Pro tip: For CNC automotive parts, also ask about CMM reports and SPC data. A vendor that tracks CPk values above 1.67 is usually a vendor that delivers consistently.
Step 5: Test Their Communication & Responsiveness (The Step Everyone Skips)
Every spreadsheet analysis pointed to Vendor B — 12% cheaper, similar specs. Something felt off. Their RFQ response took 5 days. Their answers to my questions were generic. My gut said stick with Vendor A, who replied in 24 hours with specific recommendations. Went with my gut. Later learned Vendor B had a reputation for ignoring urgent change requests — something I wouldn’t have discovered until too late.
I still kick myself for not making a test call earlier. Now I add a step: send a hypothetical urgent question during the quoting phase — something like “If we need to change the material gauge after tooling is built, how would you handle it?” Measure how quickly they respond, and whether the answer is thoughtful or standard boilerplate.
Why this matters: Automotive programs have change orders. If a vendor can’t handle a simple question during the sales process, they won’t handle a real crisis later.
Bonus: Common Mistakes I’ve Made (Learn From Them)
- Neglecting tooling ownership clauses. If you pay for the die, make sure the contract says you own it — even if the supplier files for bankruptcy.
- Assuming all aluminum extrusions are the same. 6061 vs 7075 vs 6005A — the temper matters, and not every extrusion house can do heat treat in-house.
- Not auditing secondary operations. A supplier might stamp great parts but outsource deburring to a shop that damages everything.
- Relying on verbal promises. Get it in writing. I learned that the hard way when a vendor “remembered” the tolerances differently after the order shipped.
Prices as of early 2025 — verify current rates. But the process? It hasn’t changed in years. A good supplier isn’t the one with the cheapest quote; it’s the one that passes all five checks.
